Muay Thai Training

Muay Thai emphasise on five aspects in fighting - Heart, Power, Basic Form, Technique and Fight IQ, hence, the training focuses on working these. You will see Muay Thai fighters going for daily runs and skipping for twenty to thirty minutes. This is done to maximize cardiovascular endurance in order to survive the bouts (and trust this writer, the type of cardio you need to survive 5 rounds of 3 minutes is INSANE), and also to strengthen the legs in order to improve the kick power. You will hear the trainers constantly tell their students to "go running!".

As a newbie, you will be taught good form and footwork, which is crucial for your future fight. You do not want to lose your balance easily, or make movements that let your opponent read you easily. Getting the basics right at the start important, as you do not want to form bad habits that will be more difficult to break in the future. So get it right early! Look for a gym where the trainer emphasizes having good basics.

Sparring

IQ. It's the same as driving. Knowledge on how to drive is the prequel to actual driving. You'll need to have both. So start studying techniques, and spar more!

Picking a Gym and Trainer

Picking a trainer is generally linked to the gym. As the saying goes, experience counts for everything. A trainer who has successfully trained and sent multiple fighters to the professional ring (preferably with a good win-loss rate, not just send-to-die) should be in the best position to help you achieve your pro-fight goal. He/she would have had the experience to train you based on your fight style.

Not all good fighters are good trainers. But if you can't find a trainer who has trained pro fighters, then all other things being equal, a good and experienced pro fighter would probably be a safer bet than one without the experience. He/she would have mastered the techniques necessary to fight well. Then it is up to you to figure if the trainer is able to translate mastery to coaching.

Gym / Trainer Relationship with Fight promoters

how the relationship with fight promoter affects your journey

If your goal is to be pro fighter, you will need the support of a fight promoter in order to get you into the ring. More so, if you are looking to work your way up to the big leagues. Look for a gym and trainer that are familiar and have good relationships with the Thai stadiums. A random person can't just go to a stadium and ask to sign up for a fight, especially in

the bigger leagues. So make sure you look for a gym with the strong relationships!

Being great itself may not be enough. You need someone to help you get into the spotlight.
